Nowruz, also known as Noruz, is the Persian New Year and is celebrated by millions of people worldwide. This holiday marks the beginning of spring and is a time for renewal, celebration, and new beginnings. In this post, we’ll explore the history and traditions of Nowruz and share a traditional music video to help you celebrate.
History of Nowruz
Nowruz has a history that spans over 3,000 years and originates from Zoroastrianism, an ancient Persian religion. Iranians were the first to celebrate the holiday, and it has since spread to other countries such as Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The holiday coincides with the spring equinox, which typically falls on March 20th or 21st.
Traditions
Nowruz is a time for spring cleaning and renewal. People often clean their homes and buy new clothes to start the new year fresh. They also set up a Haft Seen. Which is a table with seven items that begin with the Persian letter “sin”. These items include sprouts, apples, garlic, and coins, among others. Each item represents a different hope for the new year, such as wealth, health, and happiness.
During Nowruz, people also visit family and friends, exchange gifts, and participate in outdoor activities like picnicking. The holiday lasts for 13 days, and on the 13th day, people often have a picnic and throw away the sprouts from their Haft Seen, symbolizing the end of the old year.
Music
Music is an important part of Nowruz celebrations, therefore and traditional instruments like the santoor, sorna, and Iranian percussive instruments are often used. Shahed Mohseni, the founder and director of the InterContinental Music Awards, has created a beautiful piece of music called “Persian Nowruz” that captures the spirit of the holiday.
